Over the years, whenever a Hindi film is supposed to hit the screens there are several rumours around it. Here are 5 rumours about Hindi films that turned out to be untrue once the film hit the screens.

While we have the world at our fingertips today and can gather almost any information about films instantly, there was a time when the rumours about movies that are up for a release used to travel the distance, at least till the movie actually hits the screens. In this feature, we’ll take a look at 5 such rumours about Bollywood films that were quite circulated and talked about but ultimately turned out to be false when the film released.

Here is a list of 5 instances when massive rumours about Hindi films were doing the rounds but turned out to be false:

Rumour #1 – Achanak (1998) is a remake of Hollywood cult classic The Mask (1994)

It was the time when Govinda was at his prime. He was one of the top stars of the Hindi film industry so it was natural that each one of his films was hugely anticipated. When the first trailer of Achanak released, a sequence in it led everyone to speculate and even believe that it is a remake of The Mask. The said sequence had Govinda in a similar getup as Jim Carrey’s from The Mask. However, when the movie released it turned out that the sequence in question was a part of a song in the climax of the film and had nothing to do with 1994 Hollywood cult classic co-starring Cameron Diaz. Check out the song Jhoomle Baba Jhoomle that featured Govinda in an attire similar to The Mask:

Rumour #2: Mann (1999) is a remake of one of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of all time, Titanic (1997)

Starring Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala in the lead, Mann was quite hot among movie buffs and trade circles thanks to its star cast and chartbuster music. But there was one more thing about the film that had become the talk of the town – the rumour about it being a remake of James Cameron’s all-time classic, Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The reason for such rumour was that in the trailer of Mann, featured many sequences on a cruise. No points in guessing when the film released, it turned out that Mann had nothing to do with Titanic. However, it was a remake of another Hollywood classic, the 1957 hit, An Affair to Remember. Check out this scene from Mann below:

Rumour #3: Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) is a remake of all-time Hindi classic, Anand (1971)

Before the release of Kal Ho Naa Ho, a large section of media speculated that the movie is inspired by Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Anand. In fact, in an interview when film’s director Nikkhil Advani was asked about this particular rumour, he had stated, “What I would like to say at this point is that it’s not like I or Karan picked up a VHS of Anand and said ‘Oh, this is the film we need to remake’. We wanted to tell a story. If it reminds people of Anand or it has certain tracks that are reminiscent of Anand, is something that hasn’t been done consciously. Anand is not a love story. Kal Ho Naa Ho is a love story between Shah Rukh, Preity and Saif.” Though Kal Ho Naa Ho was not directly a remake of Anand, the character of Shah Rukh had similarities to that of Rajesh Khanna’s iconic character.
